our story

In 1882 a small group of Swedish Americans, recently immigrated to the U.S. and providentially located in Brainerd, MN planted a church. This small band of missionaries embraced a vision to reach the city with the gospel of Jesus Christ and determined together to win 1000 souls for Jesus.

The Lord blessed these faithful pioneers with a vibrant and growing congregation for many decades until, bit by bit, the original vision became dim and was finally forgotten. Finally, after many years, the Lord Jesus raised up within this shrinking congregation a small band of passionate missionaries and they came to agree that it was time to take up that founding dream and to begin again. In the fall of 2011, 129 years after its first meetings, the old church was reborn as Communitas. This ancient-modern congregation, once dying but now showing signs of rapid growth has been fashioned by the grace of God as an expression of the Body of Christ wholly dedicated to its mission to make disciples who make disciples and to embody the mission of Jesus to seek and to save the lost The Lord has provided us with a new space in the heart of downtown Brainerd where lots of people, including young families with children, are finding new life in Christ.
